- Rates
How much will the requested work cost? The simplest answer is that rates vary among projects but are based on specific criteria. I calculate project fees on an hourly basis; however, flat fees can be negotiated to accommodate budgets and goals. Depending upon the duration of a project, a 25 percent deposit may be required at the outset with the balance due upon delivery of the completed work. Estimates are tailored according to the needs of each project.
- Estimates
An estimate serves two purposes: it offers you, the client, a good sense of the investment involved and it helps define the terms of work. The estimate is a combination of objective math and subjective assessment. Generally, estimates hold fast unless the scope of work changes after the editing begins.
Criteria for estimates include:
– client goals and budget
– word count
– level of editing requested and rounds of editing required
– general quality of the writing
– turnaround time
– document complexity (images and captions, lists, tables, graphs, diagrams, footnotes, bibliography or endnotes, index)
– developing or contributing to a style sheet
– liaising with author(s) (communications via phone, meetings, email)
When I started my business of publishing books, I was directed to Paula. It was the best suggestion I could have received. She helped me find my writer’s voice for all of my business publications; then she efficiently helped to clarify my business team games text; and—our most ambitious project yet—she has helped to build a book with one hundred voices. In each case, she seamlessly and professionally contributed to tools for clients and readers around the world. I have only one editor: Paula.
